The Toilet Water Bottles: As is the case for the California Perfume Company's perfume bottles--though admittedly, to a much lesser extent--the toilet water bottles often present quite a quandary when trying to nail down their specific year(s) of issue. Interestingly, from at least 1896 through 1915, toilet waters (scented bath preparations) were put up in two, four, eight (half-pint), and sixteen (pint) ounce bottles AND their prices (reflected to the immediate right) remained consistent throughout this twenty year period. Lait Virginal, a somewhat higher-end bath preparation, was put up in two, four, eight (half-pint), and sixteen (pint) ounce bottles prior to 1897, after which the pint-sized bottle was discontinued. As with its cousin toilet waters, the prices of the Lait Virginal remained consistent from 1896 through 1915 as well. Again, like the perfume bottle section, the fragrance, the approximate date, and the bottle size will be the primary information provided for each toilet water bottle depicted in this section. Additionally, as indicated in other sections of the web site, the earliest California Perfume Company catalogs did not depict all of the company's products. The first catalog was produced in 1896, ten years after the company's start, and contained only text: no illustrations. The 1897 through 1900 catalogs did contain sparse hand-drawn illustrations. Not until 1915 were most of their products illustrated in their Color Plate catalogs, and even then, not 100%. Couple this with the fact that early catalogs would keep the same product picture for many years, though bottle and/or label style(s) would have changed.
